On 13 December 2021, Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu has been crowned Miss Universe 2021 at a grand event in Israel’s southern Red Sea coastal city of Eilat. It is the 70th Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Harnaaz Sandhu’s rise from the initial pool of 80 contestants to the smaller brackets of 16, 10, 5, and then the top three hadn’t been an easy affair. She had been Miss Chandigarh 2017 and Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018, but becoming Miss Universe is like a dream come true for her. And she expressed her happiness with tears flowing down her beautiful face. She knew she would be asked questions to justify her claim and she was ready to answer. Her becoming Miss Diva 2021 could be called a curtain raiser of her international career.
When Steve Harvey, the host, announced her name as the winner, the reigning Miss Universe, Andrea Meza of Mexico, came forward to crown her successor. It was a big moment for both Sandhu and India. With her winning, India has now three Miss Universe – Sushmita Sen (1994) and Lara Dutta (2000).
Also, the former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen was amongst the first to congratulate Sandhu. She called her “Har Hindustani Ki Naz” that translates into “pride of every Indian.”
With Sen congratulating Sandhu, the congratulatory messages started pouring in from across the globe. Everyone was amazed at Sandhu winning the pageant, but the Indians were hopeful that she would make her presence felt and make the country proud at the highest level. And she fulfilled the wishes of her family and the countrymen.
Sandhu Responded With A Cat’s Meow
Steve Harvey asked Sandhu that he had heard that Sandhu did amazing animal impersonation. And that he wanted to hear one from her. It was a joyful moment but Sandhu was a little tensed as she had just cracked the top 16 and there was a long way to go. But she confidently responded with a cat’s meow. And it soon became an Internet meme. While netizens enjoyed the moment, some Twitterati criticized Harvey’s question.
The Final Three
The excitement for Indian especially Sandhu was at the top when there were only three contestants left – Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane, Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira and Harnaaz Sandhu Miss India.
Miss South Africa was announced the runner up. She was also under tremendous pressure from her government to boycott to highlight the cause of Palestinians.
Elle Smith Also Speaks For A Social Cause
But Miss USA Elle Smith, 23, took advantage of the opportunity to highlight the plight of her home state that was devasted by tornados. She expressed her grief on Instagram that her thoughts and prayers went to those impacted by the devastating tornadoes that left 70 people dead and many missing.
